Healing is receiving meds under professional supervision. But healing is also a take-away pizza at a familiar dinner table.
I have officially completed my first inpatient chemo block of my treatment. Five days of chemotherapy and I am… fine.
My taste has changed very slightly. Plain water is a hit-or-miss, but still works if served ice cold and with fresh lemon slices. Luckily, however, I can still taste pretty much everything else.
I have so far had no pain and no significant nausea. I tire a bit quicker than usual, but my baseline energy level is still high.
During my last hours at the hospital today, there was a moment when I questioned whether “the turn” might be about to start. However, all it took was me leaving the premises of the hospital behind and I honestly felt rejuvinated.
When I got home, the first things I did was put on a set of clothes that had never been anywhere near the hospital, thoroughly wash my face, and step out onto my balcony. For a few minutes, I simply looked out at the little chapel sitting atop the vineyards – a view that has been the backdrop for all of my life – while the gentle summer breeze was welcoming me back in the place where I have always known how to be.
Since my energy levels were high enough, I had proposed to my parents that I would visit them and we should have some take-away pizza – to celebrate, but also because I had been madly craving it since at least Friday evening.
I don’t think I have ever devoured a pizza like that before. It was a true primitive instinct and I stand by it fully.
Ever since my diagnosis, some people have said to me: “Who would have thought something like this would happen to someone like you!”
I understand the sentiment, but this is not how I view life. None of us know what tomorrow will be like. In fact, tomorrow is never guaranteed. It is always a lucky coincidence.
Don’t wait to enjoy life. Talk to that friend. Tell the love of your life. Get that pizza.
I am grateful for the care I received this week – and I am happy to be home. And to you all, as always, health and happiness wherever you are!
