Sometimes in life, stockpiling crackers is the right call to make. Other times, however, you end up having to course-correct by loading your freezer with pizzas.
As you may have noticed, I took a little break from the daily updates. This is partly because the comfort of being back home has somewhat dulled my productive urges. But it’s also because not much has happened.
I am now three days out of the hospital and fortunately remain practically symptom free. I’m not one to question the whimsies of fate – experience has taught me that it is best to just bow in gratitude and make the most out of every moment.
Perhaps the most surprising thing for me has been my appetite. Not only is it not gone, it is much more ferocious than it ever was.
Anyone who knows me will tell you that when it comes to food, I am very much a “quality over quantity” type of lad. I have always enjoyed food, but I’ve also always struggled to finish huge plates. At home, I typically have a simple breakfast, a warm meal for lunch, and a light dinner. I practically never eat snacks throughout the day, which would admittedly leave me in a bit of a pickle if visitors showed up unannounced (a scenario the risk of which I prudently minimised over the years by very carefully cultivating a very specific circle of friends that would never even dream of pulling a stunt like that).
Ever since coming back from the hospital, my body has been demanding not only a lot of food, but highly caloric foods. And thus, in a pivot I truly did not see coming, the stacks of saltine crackers and rice cakes I had so prudently stocked up on had to make way for frozen pizzas and other dishes that had previously never found their way into my home.
I am certainly not complaining. Eating like a complete dingdong is definitely a lot more fun than being narrowed down to just a few foods bland enough to not be instantly rejected by the rivers of poison swooshing through my body.
I’ve said it before but my approach to this remains meeting each day as it arises. And if for now that means following the diet of a ferret going through a midlife crisis, then so be it.
Folks, I wish all of you much health and happiness! Catch you soon.
